How to Stay Motivated When You’re Exhausted at the End of Your STEM Degree

Finishing a difficult college degree is not always about finding another motivational quote. Sometimes it is about accepting exhaustion, simplifying your life, and finishing what you started.

If you are getting toward the end of a mathematics, physics, engineering, computer science, or other demanding STEM degree and you are completely exhausted, this is for you.

There is an important difference between realizing early in a degree that you genuinely chose the wrong direction and reaching the final stretch of a degree you still want while feeling completely burned out.

Near the end, motivation can disappear even when the goal still matters.

The Final Semester Can Feel Worse Than the Beginning

When I was finishing my bachelor’s degree in mathematics, I remember the last semester feeling almost physically painful. I knew I was close. I knew I wanted to finish. I knew there were only a limited number of weeks remaining.

But knowing that did not magically give me energy.

I had already spent years in college. I had changed directions, taken courses that did not ultimately apply to my final degree, attempted different academic paths, dealt with financial problems, and accumulated far more college credit than a typical bachelor’s degree requires.

By the time I reached the finish line, I was not excited.

I was exhausted.

That is one of the realities students are rarely warned about. The closer you get to completing something difficult, the more tempting it can become to mentally check out.

Motivation Is Not Always the Answer

People love to talk about motivation as though successful people wake up every morning feeling inspired.

They do not.

There will be days when you do not want to study. There will be assignments you do not care about. There will be general education requirements you think are pointless. There will be professors you do not particularly enjoy, schedules you hate, projects you would rather avoid, and exams you wish you never had to take.

The workplace will eventually contain the same problem.

Your employer is not paying you exclusively to perform tasks that happen to match your mood that morning. Part of becoming a reliable professional is demonstrating that you can complete necessary work even when that work is not particularly exciting.

Sometimes the useful question is not, “How do I become motivated?” It is, “Can I finish this even though I am not motivated?”

Challenge Accepted

One mental trick I have used throughout my life is extremely simple:

Challenge accepted.

I may wake up feeling terrible. I may be frustrated. I may not want to accomplish anything that day.

But sometimes reframing the situation as a challenge changes the direction of the day.

Instead of asking whether I feel motivated, I can ask whether I am going to accomplish one meaningful thing anyway.

That does not mean the technique works every time. Human beings are not machines, and habits are complicated. But the habits you repeatedly practice while you are young can become the default patterns you carry into adulthood.

If every difficult situation immediately becomes a reason to quit, you are practicing quitting.

If difficulty becomes a signal to simplify the problem, adjust the plan, and continue, you are practicing persistence.

Do Not Build an Impossible Semester

One reason students become exhausted is that they dramatically underestimate the amount of time required for technical coursework.

I made this mistake myself.

When you are interested in science, it is easy to imagine becoming a mathematician, physicist, mechanical engineer, electrical engineer, chemist, computer scientist, and everything else simultaneously.

Interest is not the problem.

Time is.

There are only 168 hours in a seven-day week.

Every course competes for that finite amount of time alongside sleep, food, transportation, employment, exercise, errands, relationships, and basic recovery.

Physics applies to the physics student too.

You do not possess unlimited energy simply because you are ambitious.

A Better Question

Instead of asking:

“How much can I possibly cram into this semester?”

Ask:

“What workload can I repeatedly sustain without destroying my ability to complete it?”

Ambition without realistic scheduling can become self-sabotage.

Be Careful With Double Majors

I also spent too much time trying to pursue multiple academic identities at once.

Students often think that having two bachelor’s degrees or an elaborate collection of majors will automatically make them dramatically more employable.

Sometimes a second major makes sense. Sometimes it absolutely does not.

Before adding another degree, ask what it actually does for your career.

  • Does the second major qualify you for a specific position?
  • Would graduate education accomplish more in roughly the same amount of time?
  • Would an internship provide more practical value?
  • Would research experience improve your résumé more?
  • Would finishing sooner and obtaining professional experience be more useful?

Do not automatically spend several additional semesters collecting credentials simply because the subjects interest you.

You can study something without obtaining another degree in it.

A PhD Is Usually About Specialization

Another misconception among ambitious STEM students is that advanced education eventually means learning everything.

It usually means the opposite.

As your education progresses, your area of serious research often becomes narrower.

A physicist is not necessarily an expert in every field of physics. A mathematician is not necessarily an expert in every branch of mathematics.

Advanced research tends to involve becoming extremely knowledgeable about a comparatively small collection of questions.

You do not have to master the entire scientific universe before you are qualified to contribute something meaningful to it.

My Degree Took Much Longer Than Planned

My own path through college was anything but clean.

I started college when I was young, changed directions, stopped, returned, studied different subjects, pursued mathematics and physics, dealt with financial limitations, and eventually completed my bachelor’s degree in mathematics much later than I originally imagined.

At one point, while studying mathematics and physics at the University of Texas at Dallas, I ran out of money.

That was not an abstract academic problem.

Bills still existed.

Eventually I completed the remaining portion of my mathematics degree through Indiana University East.

By graduation, I had accumulated far more undergraduate credit than was actually necessary for a bachelor’s degree.

That experience is one of the reasons I tell students to be careful about unnecessary detours.

Finishing Is a Skill

During my final semester, I remember thinking about the remaining time almost like a countdown.

Sixty days.

Finish.

I did not need to redesign my entire life during those sixty days.

I needed to complete the degree.

This is something students sometimes miss because they are constantly thinking about the next five years.

You do not always need a five-year solution.

Sometimes you need a sixty-day solution.

When the finish line is close, temporarily simplify your objective:
  • Attend the classes.
  • Complete the assignments.
  • Study for the exams.
  • Protect your sleep.
  • Stop adding unnecessary commitments.
  • Finish the semester.

Life Will Not Always Cooperate

College is not the last time you will be asked to perform while tired.

Eventually there may be jobs, businesses, children, relationships, medical appointments, financial obligations, broken cars, sick family members, unexpected bills, and countless other responsibilities competing for your attention.

You cannot build a life around the expectation that conditions will always be ideal before you act.

They will not be.

At the same time, this does not mean ignoring legitimate physical or mental limitations. It means learning the difference between an actual limitation and ordinary discomfort.

Sometimes you need recovery.

Sometimes you need to change direction.

Sometimes you need help.

And sometimes you simply do not feel like doing the assignment.

Those are different problems and should not automatically receive the same solution.

Stop Measuring Yourself Against Everybody Else

Another source of exhaustion is comparison.

One person looks at somebody else’s accomplishments and thinks:

“They did something difficult, so I must be failing.”

Another person sees the exact same situation and thinks:

“I accomplished something difficult too. I am making progress.”

The interpretation matters.

If you repeatedly teach yourself that nothing you accomplish is enough, eventually every achievement becomes emotionally worthless.

You finish one course and immediately criticize yourself because somebody else took five.

You finish a degree and criticize yourself because somebody else finished younger.

You get a job and criticize yourself because somebody else earns more.

That game never ends.

Compare your decisions against your objectives, not somebody else’s highlight reel.

Simplify Your Life During the Final Stretch

If you are close to finishing and overwhelmed, temporarily remove as much unnecessary complexity as possible.

  • Do not add another major simply because you are interested in it.
  • Do not volunteer for five new projects.
  • Do not take an absurd course load just to graduate slightly faster.
  • Do not spend every free hour comparing yourself to strangers online.
  • Do not confuse constant activity with useful progress.

Your objective during the final stretch is not to prove that you can simultaneously manage every possible responsibility.

Your objective is to cross the finish line.

You Are Preparing for Professional Responsibility

A college degree is not valuable simply because you completed a collection of interesting classes.

Part of what you are demonstrating is reliability.

Can you work through a long-term objective?

Can you follow instructions?

Can you meet deadlines?

Can you complete tasks you would not personally choose?

Can you work with other people?

Can you adapt when the original plan stops working?

Those skills matter well beyond mathematics, physics, engineering, or computer science.

The Final Message

If you are toward the end of your STEM degree and losing motivation, you may not need another motivational speech.

You may simply need to accept that finishing difficult things sometimes feels terrible.

You do not need to love every remaining assignment.

You do not need to feel inspired every morning.

You do not need to become a completely different person overnight.

You need to identify the next necessary action and complete it.

Challenge accepted.

Finish the assignment.

Finish the course.

Finish the semester.

Then decide what comes next.
