This book is written to be unsettling on purpose, not for shock, but to make readers notice patterns early, trust their instincts, and understand how psychological control can develop step by step.

Dear Diary,
Today is my thirteenth birthday, and my mom wants to throw me a stupid birthday party again. I am so too old for this. I wish she would just let me go hang out with my friends. Ughh! Whatever, though – I guess it will be cool to see Mathew again. The last time I saw him was when we were just kids, or I was, I think… He was really cute then. I think he turned 21 or 22 this year.
Maybe he could get some drinks, and we could sneak off after everyone else leaves and just hang out. I know he and I had a connection back then. I think he had a crush on me. I wonder what he looks like now. I heard he got bigger when he went off to college.
I gotta go now. It’s time for the party, and I gotta pick something out to wear. I think I will wear a short dress. My mom bought me this cute chiffon lace type dress or something. I am gonna put knee-high socks on with it and tuck a tight little t-shirt into it. My mom always wants me to dress like a proper lady.
I don’t know why; she got pregnant when she was only fifteen, and I don’t know where or who my dad is. She only said that it was love at first sight for a blind person.
Anyways, I hear her calling me now, so I gotta go.
“Coming, mother! – jeez.”
